When most people think of Tarot Cards, we think of an old wrinkled woman in the back of an incense and smoke filled room. Flowing robe and crooked ruby ringed fingers laying down ominous looking cards one at a time, slowly telling of the imminent demise of the poor person sitting across the table. WOW, pretty scary!! Well FolksThat's just the Hollywood version, it's not reality.Here's A Quick History LessonPlaying cards (in general) made their way to Western Europe from Egypt over 600 years ago. Then, some time in the 15th century the first Tarot deck was created in Northern Italy.Over the next 300 years they were used in a game similiar to present day Bridge. It wasn't until a Catholic priest named Eliphas Levi got ahold of a deck of Tarot Cards that they were transformed into the metaphysical cards of today.
Later, in the 1800's, Levi's origional deck became known as the Raider-Waite Tarot deck. PersonallyI feel Tarot decks strong suit (pardon the pun) is in the exploration of one's subconscious. What makes a person "tick," if you will.Many believe a good reader can draw out subtle tendencies in a person's character. A gifted diviner can show why we act in specific situations. Why we act as we do--both good and bad.
